Chapter 9

Jackson arrived back at his aunt’s house, as he pulled up he saw Delilah’s car parked, and her sitting on the front steps. She had on the same clothes he saw her in the day before, and there was something hollow about her appearance. She look at him as he got out, her eyes sunken and dejected.

“Delilah, what are you doing here?” He asked. “I thought you were at school.”

She looked up at him, her lips were dry and there were was a dry ash on her cheeks. She had been crying. “I came by, but your aunt said you were out, so I waited for you.” She said, her voice low and raspy.

“What happened? What’s wrong?” He took a seat next to her, putting his arm around her shoulder.

“Everything.” She placed her head on his shoulder. “I just want to rest. I’m so tired.” She said.

Burdened by his guilt, a weight settled on his heart. He held her closer. “Delilah, I want to talk to you about something.”

“Actually, me too.” She said. “That’s why I’m here. Can we go inside?”

“Yeah, come on.” They stood and headed into the house and up to Jackson’s room.

She sat down at the edge of the bed, her hands resting in her lap. He took a seat next to her.

“Can I ask you something?” She said.

“Yeah?”

“What do you know about your father?”

His eyebrows drew together. “Uh, well, I know he died before I was born. My step dad never talked about what he did for a living. Just that he invested in a bunch of stock and left me a trust fund. Why do you ask?”

Delilah twiddled her thumbs, taking in a breath. “There’s something I need to show you.” She reached into her pocket, and took out the photo of her and Silas, handing it to him.

He looked at it. “That’s my father. Why do you have a picture of my father and...” He squinted, “Some baby.”

Delilah looked up into his eyes, letting out a huff of discomfort. “Jackson, that baby is me. I’m your sister.”

There was a moment of silence, so uncomfortable that Delilah’s stomach heaved at the memory of her trying to kiss him.

Jackson bit his bottom lip, staring blankly at the wall ahead. Suddenly, every encounter, every feeling he had for her up to now came full circle. It all made sense now. Those feelings they shared weren’t romantic. They were blood. He took in and let out a deep breath. His elbows rested on his thighs, he turned to Delilah.

“We almost kissed.” He said.

Delilah’s eyes grew wide, embarrassment lacerating her insides. Then they both burst into laughter, turning a moment of humiliation and shock into a moment of hilarity.

“Oh God, why are we laughing?” Delilah said, her fingers pressed against her eyes. “There is nothing funny about any of this.”

“I honestly don’t know. This is a lot.” He said, trying to suppress his laughter. “How do you even know if this is really true? It’s just a photo.”

“My mother told me to stay away from you after you left yesterday.
